Wood is a biological material. If protected from moisture and insect attack, it can last for centuries. When wood is not properly protected, however, it will succumb to biological processes that decompose wood: insects that eat the wood or fungi that cause rot and decay. The most damaging insects that attack structural wood are termites. Their activity results in damage and control costs that exceed $1.5 billion per year nationally. If your property is in New Jersey, we can do a detailed inspection for the presence of termite.
The risks to human health posed by ionizing radiation are well known. Radon gas is by far the most important source of ionizing radiation among gases of natural origin. Radon (Rn-222) is a noble gas formed from radium (Ra-226), which is a decay product of uranium (U-238). Uranium and radium occur naturally in soils and rocks. Other decay products of uranium include the isotopes thoron (Rn-220) and actinon (Rn-219). Radon gas, which has a half-life of 3.8 days, emanates from rocks and soils and tends to concentrate in enclosed spaces, such as underground mines or houses. It is a major contributor to the ionizing radiation dose received by the general population. We test for radon with are charcoal canisters that we place in the lowest living part of your home.
Having your tank removed, inspected and the soil around it tested will eliminate any potential problems you would have encountered if your tank remained on your property in New Jersey. Removing your underground storage tank will satisfy the most stringent of home inspections or due diligence by future home buyers. We do tank sweeps.
